MONTEFALCONE DI VAL FORTORE
The village borders on the province of Foggia and is situated in a land rich in springs and woodlands; it overlooks the highest part of the Fortore. Deeply damaged by earthquakes in 1456 and in 1962, it is divided into two urban areas: the oldest part developed around the ruins of the medieval castle. It was a feud of Matteo de Lecto, it belonged afterwards to the Caracciolo and to the Loffredo families. It belonged then to the Duke of Sangro and the Prince of Rocella, who owned it up to the abolition of feudalism. In 1861 it passed from the province of Foggia to the province of Benevento and, by royal decree of 22 January 1863, it took the name of Val Fortore. It was the birthplace of Fra Marco, who was Carlo II of Anjou’s and Niccolò da Montefalcone’s personal confessor, and Boccaccio’s friend.
