Monument description : Castle Ruins
The monument is located in comune di Airola in provincia di Benevento.
The castle is located on the hill of Monteoliveto, about 380 metres above sea level. This building represents the oldest monument in the municipality.
The building was the residence of Count Rainulfo, an opponent of Ruggiero I (King of the Two Sicilies). It was enlarged by Frederick II between the 12th and 13th centuries and then inherited by Count Della Leonessa. Later, it became the property of the Carafa and D’Avalos families after 1529.
To this day, the remains of the fortress consist mostly of: a wall, the entrance with the Caracciolo coat of arms and part of the drawbridge.
