Church of the Immaculate Conception

Monument description : Church of the Immaculate Conception

The monument is located in comune di Airola in provincia di Benevento.

Construction began in 1723 thanks to Donna Antonia Caracciolo, the last duchess of Airola. The foundation stone was laid by Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini, Archbishop of Benevento. The latter received the blessing of Pope Benedict XIII.

The church and convent were then finalised in 1725. Legally, the complex is called ‘SS. Conception’, but today it is commonly called ‘San Pasquale’. The latter derives from the fact that in the central chapel, on the left, there is a statue representing St Paschal Baylon.

The interior consists of a large central nave in Alcantarine style and six side chapels. The chapels are dedicated to different saints, starting with the one to the right of the entrance: St Anthony of Padua, St Paschal Baylon, St Joseph of the Cross, St Lucy, St Francis of Assisi and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Masses are celebrated:

  • weekdays – 08:00 hours
  • public holidays – 08:30, 10:30 and 19:00 hours (daylight saving time: 20:00 hours)
