Church of St Sophia

Monument description : Church of St Sophia

The monument is located in comune di Benevento in provincia di Benevento.

The church of St Sophia stands on the square of the same name in Benevento; the construction was completed by Arechi II, Duke of Benevento, and was inaugurated in 762 AD.
Due to its semi-circular and semi-stellar plan, it is considered one of the most distinctive buildings of the Middle Ages. The building has two concentric corridors composed of pillars and columns, which form a central hexagon and an outer decagon, and support the entire vault, creating suggestive plays of light and shadow.

The church was severely affected by the 1688 and 1702 earthquakes. In 1705, the church was restored by engineer Carlo Buratti at the request of Pope Benedict XIII.

In June 2011, the church of St Sophia became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Church of St. Sophia is accessible to the disabled.
