The monument is located in comune di Circello in provincia di Benevento.

The ducal castle was built during four distinct historical periods between the 10th and 19th centuries: the Lombard period, the Norman period, the Aragonese period and the early 20th century. It was recently renovated and opened to the public in 2016.

The castle was a spectator to several battles, including the one that took place in June 1946 between the Aragonese and Charles VIII’s mercenaries. During the latter, the famous captain of fortune, Camillo Vitelli, was killed under the city walls.
