The town of Cerreto Sannita is located at 34 km of Benevento and is located at an altitude of 277 meters.

The town is located at the entrance to the Matese regional park and in the upper valley of the Titerno’s river.

Cerreto Sannita was completely rebuilt after the catastrophic earthquake of 1688. It is characterised by its original urban layout and is known for the traditional production of art ceramics that were produced there since the 13th century.

The first documented historical information on the origin of the town dates back to Norman times in the 12th century, when it was owned by the Sanframondo family. The territory was eventually passed on to the Carafa family, who rebuilt the entire town after an earthquake destroyed it. The Carafa remained in possession of the land until the upheaval and abolition of the feudal system. First part of the province of Terra del Lavoro, with the Unification of Italy it became part of the province of Benevento.

The local economy for years was based on the trade and production of woollen cloth, but the activity began to decline after the unification of Italy due to strong competition from northern regions.
The town received a lot of money from the numerous inhabitants who emigrated to the United States. The money was mainly used to renovate and expand houses, embellish churches and found three banks (Banca Circondariale del Sannio,Banca Popolare Cooperativa,Banca popolare di Cerreto Sannita). The latter went bankrupt during the recession following the First World War.

After the Second World War, the bridges that connected the town to other municipalities had to be entirely rebuilt, having been destroyed by German soldiers. In addition, the administration had to cope with constantly rising food prices and rampant unemployment.

Today, the municipality has a population of about 3,700 inhabitants and the local economy consists mostly of: extra virgin olive oil production and ceramic workshops.
