The town of Fragneto Monforte is located in Alto Sannio, at the foot of the Toppa Barrata hill, between the two rivers Tammaro and Calore. The population is around 1,800 inhabitants.
The origin of the name Fragneto Monforte may derive from the ‘English oak’, which is an oak tree found in the area, and from Bartolomeo Monforte (one of the first feudal lords).
In 1113, Fragneto Monforte became part of the county of Ariano, whose lord was Rodolfo Pinello, a follower of the Norman king Ruggiero. But, in 1138, the castle was sacked and set on fire by Roger II.
In 1456, an earthquake destroyed part of the village and the castle. The latter was rebuilt by the inhabitants. Later, the territory was donated to Don Ferrante Montalto, viceroy lieutenant of the Kingdom in 1528. The fief remained in the Montalto family with the title of Duchy.
With the abandonment of the feudal system, it became part of Benevento after the unification of Italy.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Fragneto Monforte consists of a green oak tree on a blue background resting on three green hills. At the bottom, a blue bifid flag with the inscription ‘Duriora Concoxit’ in capital and gold letters.
Local production consists mainly of: cereals, fruit, oil, wine and pastries.
An important event of great importance for tourism is the International Balloon Meeting, in which multiple colourful hot-air balloons are flown, colouring the sky. The event is celebrated in October.
