The town of Guardia Sanframondi is located at 29 km of Benevento and is located at an altitude of 428 meters.

The municipality of Guardia Sanframonti is part of the Titerno mountain community, is located in an environment entirely covered by vineyards and olive groves on the Telesina Valley and is north of the Calore river.

Guardia Sanframondi, a small municipality of Lombard and Norman origin, has preserved its typical medieval style intact. The present municipality was built around the castle, which was built in 1139 by the Norman Raone, progenitor of the Sanframondo family. And it is from the Sanframondo family that the name of the municipality originates.

The castle witnessed a double siege:

  1. In 1440, Alfonso V of Aragon threatened to destroy the village and castle. Count Guglielmo IV Sanframondo had to submit to the new ruler.
  2. in 1461, the town and castle were besieged and sacked by the troops of Ferdinand I of Naples. The consequence was that the Sanframondo family lost their fiefs and were exiled.

From the 12th century until the abandonment of the feudal system, the territory was part of the county of Cerreto Sannita. The feud belonged first to the Sanframondo, then to the Della Marra, then again to the Sanframondo. Later, from the 15th century, it passed into the hands of the Carafa family until the feudal system was abandoned.
In 1811, the municipality of Guardia Sanframondi was an integral part of the district of Piedimonted’Alife and in 1861 it came under the province of Benevento.

The town was also hit by several earthquakes in 1456 and 1688. The latter completely destroyed the town, claiming over 1,000 victims.
Furthermore, in 1943, the municipality was bombed by US troops, causing much damage and death.

Today, the municipality has about 4800 inhabitants. Guardi Sanframonti is known for its wine production (Guardiolo d.o.c.), which is the main economic resource of the village and is appreciated both in Italy and abroad, and olive oil extraction.
The municipality is also known for its traditional religious event held every seven years after 15 August. The event celebrates the Penitential Processions of the Assumption, in which the entire population participates. The ceremony includes penitents wearing a white habit and hood, ‘battenti’ and ‘flagellants’.
