Discover the municipality of Limatola

The town of Limatola is located at 30 km of Benevento and is located at an altitude of 48 meters.

Limatola is a municipality with about 4,000 residents and is located on the right bank of the Volturno river, a few kilometres from Caserta.
The historical centre is located at the foot of a hill around the Castle of Norman times. The latter underwent numerous extensions and transformations over the centuries.

The name Limatola derives from the Latin word ‘limatula’ meaning sand or a sandy place. Moreover, numerous archaeological findings have shown that the ruins of the town existed in Roman times.
Despite these findings, the first documented historical information dates back to 842, when the Longobards of Benevento and Salerno fought a battle in the area.

In 1064, the territory was owned by the Abbey of Montecassino. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was the domain of Guglielmo de Beaumont, the Cantelmo, the d’Artus, the Marzano, the Della Ratta and the Acquaviva families. After 1500, the feud was in the hands of the de Capua, the Gambacorta, the Mastelloni, and finally the Carafa di Maddaloni, who held it until the feudal system was abandoned. In 1811, the municipality became part of the Solopaca district and Sant’Agata de’Goti in 1816. With the unification of Italy, the municipality was incorporated into the province of Benevento.
