The municipality is located in an area bordering the province of Foggia, rich in springs and wooded areas, occupies the highest part of the Fortore and is close to the source of the Fortore river.

Ancient land belonging to Matteo de Lecto, it was owned by the Mansella family of Salerno, Caracciolo, Piccolomini and Loffredo. Later, it was owned by the Duke of Sangro and Prince Rocella, who held it until the abandonment of feudal rights in 1806.
Until 1811, the municipality was part of the Principato Ultra, and then passed under the province of Foggia from 1811 and 1961. After the unification of Italy, the municipality was transferred from the province of Foggia to the province of Benevento.

The municipality was severely damaged by the earthquakes of 1456 and 1962.

Today, the municipality has around 1400 inhabitants and has a productive activity that consists mostly of sheep farming, in addition to the large wind farm built in 1995-1996.
