Paupisi

Paupisi is a municipality of about 1600 inhabited and situated on the slopes of the Taburno mountain range. It is surrounded by a countryside rich in olive trees, vines and chestnut groves.

Documented historical records date back to the Middle Ages, when it was originally a hamlet of Torrecuso.

Initially it was the feudal domain of the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, then of that of San Lupo in Benevento. Subsequently, it was owned by the Frangipane family, the Della Leonessa family, the Caracciolo family, the Ceva Grimaldi family, and finally by the Dukes of Sangro, who retained ownership until the feudal rights were abandoned.

This town is known as the land of oil and wine; it is no coincidence that the coat of arms of the town hall shows a tower surrounded by vines and olive trees. Wines such as Aglianico, Falanghina and Coda di Volpe are produced here.

In addition, typical dishes of the area are:

  • i Cecatielli; handmade pasta made with wheat flour,
  • la Padellaccia; a dish made from the typical suckling pig raised in the area.
