Discover the municipality of San Lorenzello

The town of San Lorenzello is located at 38 km of Benevento and is located at an altitude of 250 meters.

The municipality is crossed by the Titerno river and is located on the borders of the municipalities of Castelvenere, Cerreto Sannita, Cusano Mutri, Faicchio, Guardia Sanframondi and San Salvatore Telesino. The historical centre of the municipality is located on the face of Mount Erbano.

Historically, the first written document on San Lorenzello dates back to 1151, when Guglielmo I Sanframondo declared himself the owner of the territory.
Besides being a fief of the Sanframundo family until 1641, the territory was also owned by the Carafa family until the abolition of the feudal system in 1806. It became part of the province of Benevento after the unification of Italy.

The town was hard hit by the plague in 1656, cholera in 1837 and the terrible earthquakes of 1688 and 1805.
After the destruction caused by the terrible earthquakes, the historical centre was always rebuilt maintaining its original appearance. The latter is characterised by small squares, alleys and ancient palaces dating back to the 17th-18th centuries, including the Palazzo Massone.

San Lorenzello is renowned as a ‘pottery production centre’ and was the birthplace of one of the greatest potters of the 18th century, master Nicola Giustiniani. The town has preserved intact, in its workshops, the art of ceramics that has been handed down for centuries. This art is manifested mainly in the production of tureens, trays and other objects.

Besides the production of ceramics, the municipality is also famous for the production of wine, oil and taralli. Taralli are biscuits made from water and flour, which can be prepared with oil, pepper or sugar.
