Montenero di BisacciaThe municipality is situated on a hill to the right of the Sabato river and is composed of many small hamlets. The most famous hamlet is San Marco ai Monti, from which it is possible to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view, called ‘Belvedere del Sannio’.
The coat of arms of the municipality is a representation of two green mountains with the archangel Michael Librato at the top. The background of the coat of arms is mostly blue.
Numerous archaeological finds dating back to Roman times have been unearthed, but certain information on the origin of the village is only available around the 11th century, when it was called Sant’ Angeli a Cupolo.
The territory was owned by the Baron of Montefusco, the de Molisio, the Aquila and the Gambatesa families.
Finally, it became the property of the Bishop’s Canteen of Benevento until the Unification of Italy. The municipality was aggregated to the province of Benevento after 1861.
Today, the municipality has approximately 4200 inhabitants and its local production consists of cereals, wine and oil.
