Rocca dei Rettori

Rocca dei Rettori is the name commonly given to the castle of Benevento. It was built in 1321 under the leadership of Pope John XXII, modelled on the large military buildings in Avignon and Carcassonne in France.
The site stands at the highest point of Benevento’s historic centre, on a dismantled Longobard fortress, itself built on an ancient Roman acropolis that dominated the road from Benevento to Avellino.

Seat of the Papal Rectors, it has three floors with two watchtowers. The fortress was restored after the earthquake of 1702 and in 1998. Today it is the seat of the province of Benevento.

Inside, there is a permanent exhibition entitled ‘Persone eccellenti. Traces of the Benevento Risorgimento’.
