The town of Colle Sannita is located at 36 km of Benevento and is located at an altitude of 729 meters.

The town is part of the mountain community of Titerno and Alto Tammaro. The town is divided into two zones:

  • the historical zone, situated on a hill
  • the modern area, located in the valley.

The name Colle Sannita derives from the hill on which the historical part of the town stood and was originally called ‘Colle’. The town was only named ‘Colle Sannita’ in 1862.

The origins of Colle Sannita are Norman. It was a fief of the Della Marra, Della Leonessa and finally Di Somma families. The Di Somma family remained in possession of the fief until the abandonment of the feudal system. In 1647, it was the scene of one of the many conflicts of the Masaniello revolution.
Between 1806 and 1815, it was a den of brigands.

Until 1809, the town was part of Capitanata, then passed to the province of Campobasso, and from 1861 to the province of Benevento.

Today, the population of Colle Sannita is about 2300 inhabitants.
Leaving the town towards the south, there is the small church of S. Maria della Libera, built in 1439 and where the leader and captain Giacomo Caldora died suddenly. He was considered the most powerful baron of the Kingdom of Naples, who wanted to sack the town during the conflicts between the Angevins and the Aragonese in 1439.
The area called ‘Decorata’, located not far from the village, is surrounded by woods and has a small lake, an ideal destination for tourists and families who like to stay by the lake.
