The municipality is located in the centre of the Valle Caudina, on the Isclero river and the south-western slopes of Mount Taburno.
The first documented historical information dates back to the 10th century, when it was a small village of the nearby Airola.
It belonged to the noble families of Della Leonessa, D’Avalos, Caracciolo and De Capua, and then became part of the Royal Property until the abolition of the feudal system in 1809.
With the unification of Italy, it became part of the province of Benevento.
Today, the municipality has about 4,000 inhabitants and local production consists mainly of cereals, fruit, wine and sheep farming.
