Ponte

Ponte is a municipality of about 2,500 inhabitants and is famous for its wineries, wood industry and oil production.

The town already existed in Roman times and its name derives from a majestic stone bridge ‘ad pontem lapideum’, over which the Via Latina that connected Rome to Benevento passed. In addition, the town was the site of many archaeological finds, especially coins from the Roman era.

In the Middle Ages, the Lombard prince Pandolfo Capodiferro, together with the Monastery of St Anastasia, donated the village to the abbot of the Monastery of St Wolf and Zosimus in Benevento.

The current settlement was built around the year 1000, while the Castle was built at the end of the 11th century and was the subject of extensive conflicts between the Angevins and the Swabians in 1266.
The feud was owned by the Fenucchio, the Sanframondo, the Caracciolo and, from 1585, became the Sarriano, who held it until the feudal system was abandoned in 1806.

Initially, the municipality was part of Molise, but lost its autonomy in 1829 by being aggregated to Casalduni. Later, in 1892, it was aggregated to Paupisi and regained its autonomy in 1913.
