San Giorgio del Sannio, known as San Giorgio la Montagna until 1929, is one of the most densely populated towns in the province of Benevento with around 10,000 inhabitants. The municipality is located on the Apennines of Campania between the Sabato and Calore Irpino rivers and is characterised by numerous tertiary activities, making it a popular tourist-commercial centre.
Its origins can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it was a hamlet of Baron Montefusco. The territory was owned by the French soldiers Roberto, Filippo Caracciolo and the Spinelli family until 1806, when the feudal system was abolished. After 1811, it was the capital of the Principato Ultra and later became part of the province of Benevento.
The town is composed of four hamlets: San Giorgio, Sant’Agnese, Ginestra and San Rocco.
The municipality is continuously expanding and a population boom was recorded during the post-earthquake reconstruction of the 1980s.
