Discover the municipality of San Lorenzo Maggiore
The town of San Lorenzo Maggiore is located at 24 km of Benevento and is located at an altitude of 330 meters.The municipality is located on the border with the municipalities of San Lupo, Ponte, Paupisi, Vitulano and Guardia Sanframondi. The Calore river and the Lanare torrent flow through the territory.
The first settlement in the area is traced back to the Lombard era with the name ‘limata’.
Limata witnessed several battles between the Lombard troops and the Byzantine army. After the year 1000, thanks to its excellent strategic position, Limata was an important commercial centre with a rapid demographic development.
In the 15th century, the village of Limata became the property of the Carafa family. The latter, preferring to live in Naples, abandoned the castle and the village. This resulted in the abandonment of the town in 1570 and caused some citizens to migrate to what is now San Lorenzo Maggiore.
The 1688 earthquake caused extensive damage to the town, which was rebuilt in 1724.
Moreover, after the unification of Italy, the municipality had to face the phenomenon of banditry.
Today, the municipality has about 2100 inhabitants and is known for the production of high quality oils and wines.
The characteristic feature of the municipality is the historical centre, where houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries can be seen.

From Pescara: take the A14 motorway, exit at Termoli and continue to Boiano-Benevento. Take the Benevento-Telese-Caianello highway, exit at Paupisi and continue to San Lorenzo Maggiore.
From Rome: take the A1 motorway, exit Caianello. Take the Caianello-Telese-Benevento dual carriageway, exit Paupisi and continue to San Lorenzo Maggiore.
From Naples – Caserta: take the A1 motorway, exit Caserta Sud and head towards Valle di Maddaloni. At Cantinelle, take the Fondovalle Isclero and exit at San Salvatore Telesino. Continue in direction of Telese Terme-Benevento, exit at Paupisi and continue towards San Lorenzo Maggiore.
From Salerno – Avellino: take the A16 motorway, exit Benevento. Continue towards Telese Terme-Caianello, exit at Paupisi and continue towards San Lorenzo Maggiore.
From Bari: take the A16 motorway, Benevento exit. Continue to Telese Terme-Caianello, exit at Paupisi and continue to San Lorenzo Maggiore.
