The Egyptian part of the Sannio Museum combines tradition and modernity. Finds from the Benevento Temple dedicated to the goddess Isis, known as the ‘Lady of Benevento’, have been set up in a ‘virtual 3D temple’.
The exhibition route has reconstructed a journey through four rooms, starting with an initiation into the cult of the goddess and ending in the sacred area.
During the circuit, one witnessed three three-dimensional video projections showing the cult of Isis, her figure and mythological significance. After the video projections, a tour of the exhibits continues, illustrated by explanatory panels.
The Temple of Isis was built by Emperor Domitian between 88 and 89 AD. The materials came from Egypt, making Benevento the western site with the highest concentration of Egyptian artefacts: 42 finds, mainly statues.
To this day it is not possible to determine where the Iseum was located, but it was one of the main places of worship in southern Italy, active for centuries until the Edict of Constantine and the Edict of Thessalonica in the 5th century AD.
