Amorosi

The small town of Amorosi is located at the mouth of the Teresina Valley and has always been dedicated to commercial and craft activities, as evidenced by the presence of various shops and businesses.

According to someone, the town of Amorosi arose around the ancient ‘Castrum Amorosi’ at the beginning of the 9th century. According to others, the town has origins dating back to late medieval times; founded by some survivors who escaped from the destruction of Telesia’s earthquake in 1349.

The lands of Amorosi were owned as a feud by the most prestigious feudal families of southern Italy at the time (Sanframondo, Carafa, Gaetani, Colonna, Siscar, Loffredo dei Marchesi di Monteforte, Caracciolo, Piscitelli); the town of Amorosi reached its peak when it became a feud of the Caracciolo’s family.

In terms of town planning, a large area of the old feudal village was demolished in the second half of the 19th century and a majestic and spacious square was built, making the village more modern.

During the same period, two artistic stone bridges were built, one over the Calore river and the other over the Volturno river, connecting Amorosi with neighbouring municipalities in the province of Caserta.
During the Second World War, the two bridges, being the headquarters of the German commando, were the target of an air raid launched by the Americans. At the end of the Second World War, Amorosi was the town that suffered the greatest number of victims and material damage.

Today, the population of Amorosi is around 2700 inhabitants. It has an utilised agricultural area of 770.56 hectares, which is mainly used for grain.
